Mission & History
Our Mission
Our work of "touching lives and building community" reflects our century-old mission:
  • Volunteers of America is a movement organized to reach and uplift all people and bring them to the knowledge and active service of God.

  • Volunteers of America, illustrating the presence of God through all that we do, serves people and communities in need and creates opportunities for people to experience the joy of serving others.

  • Volunteers of America measures its success in positive change in the lives of individuals and communities we serve.
Community Focus, National Impact
History
Our organization is a locally-managed, locally-governed affiliate of Volunteers of America, one of the nation's oldest, largest and most comprehensive human service charities. Nationally, Volunteers of America serves more than one-million people annually.
Facts and Figures

The "Greater" New Orleans in our name includes these 16 parishes: Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington, Terrebonne, LaFourche , St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, St. James, St. Mary, Assumption, Livingston, and St. Helena. Serving over 44,000 people last year, we have more than 600 staff members, and 2000 volunteers.

Our work in New Orleans began in 1896, the same year that the national Volunteers of America movement was founded in New York by the Christian social reformers Ballington and Maud Booth.

True to our founders' promise to "go wherever we are needed and do whatever comes to hand," Volunteers of America has offered a diverse range of services in Greater New Orleans. We are perhaps best-known for our maternity and adoption services. Since the 1940s, we have helped create thousands of loving families through adoption.

We have always stayed true to our founding promise, answering the call to help in times of crisis. Many New Orleanians remember Volunteers of America's work during Hurricane Betsy in 1966, and more recently, our assistance to the victims of Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

Values
Vision
As a faith-based human service ministry, we believe we serve God through joyful, compassionate service to our neighbors. As a interdenominational, ecumenical auxiliary to communities of faith, we offer opportunities for others to express their deep spiritual need to serve.

Our vision for Volunteers of America of Greater New Orleans is to be the premiere nonprofit human service provider in the quality of our programs and services, in stewardship of the resources entrusted to us, in creating new ways to serve people, in measuring our results, in managing change and planning for the future, and most of all, in living our mission of service to our community.
